Mongolian Beef

Servings 4

Ingredients

  • 750 grams steak I use sirloin
  • 1/3 cup cornflour
  • ¼ cup neutral oil
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 thumb sized piece of ginger peeled and grated on a microplane
  • 4 tablespoons minced garlic
  • 1/3 cup soy sauce
  • ½ cup water
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 8 spring onions green part only (use the whites for another dish) cut into 3cm pieces
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds
  • Optional – chilli oil or chilli flakes

Instructions

  1. Slice the steak into thin slices around half a cm thick. On your board, lay the slices flat, cover with cling film and pound the meat to flatten. I use a rolling pin, but a meat pounder is more apt! haha!
  2. Put the meat in a plastic bag with the cornflour and shake to coat. Massage a little to make sure each piece is coated.
  3. Take a large frying pan on a medium high heat and add the oil.
  4. Once hot, add the steak to the pan in a single layer. Do this in batches so that it doesn’t boil. Cook for 1 minute, 30 seconds each side. Remove from the pan and set aside. Once all steak has been cooked, sprinkle with salt.
  5. In the same pan you had the beef in, add the ginger and garlic to the pan, saute for 15 seconds, stirring constantly.
  6. Add the soy sauce, water and brown sugar and bring to the boil.
  7. Add the steak into the sauce, and let the sauce thicken for around 30 seconds.
  8. Turn off the heat, add the spring onions and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
  9. Serve!
