Famous in Southland New Zealand Cheese Rolls use simple pantry ingredients and are super cheesy and delicious!
Jump to RecipeIf you have never tried Cheese Rolls you are in for a treat! You make a cheesy sauce, then spread this on slices of buttered bread, then roll up and bake. There are PLENTY of different recipe variations for Cheese Rolls but this is what my family enjoy the most. They can have the addition of raw onion but we just aren’t raw onion people! Cheese rolls are lovingly nicknamed Southland Sushi!
The ingredients are simple, a loaf of bread, I prefer using white bread. a packet of Maggi Onion Soup mix, Cheddar cheese, evaporated milk and butter or margarine. You need to spread the butter on the bread so I often choose a spreadable butter. Otherwise simply keep your butter at room temperature or use margarine.
How to make Cheese Rolls:
First you take a pot and combine the evaporated milk and onion soup over a medium low heat. Stir well. Now add the grated cheese. Stir well. Now we are going to bring the mixture to a simmer. Keep stirring so that it doesn’t stick. We are cooking the mix until it is thick and smooth. Once it is thick, turn off and leave to cool a little. It is easier to spread on the bread when it is cool.
It’s now time to spread the bread with butter/margarine. Now decide if you are going to take the crusts off the bread. IF you take the crusts off it does make them easier to roll. I have left the crusts on in this case.
Now spread the cheese mix on the unbuttered side of bread and roll up. This might be the time to ask little family members to help you spread and roll! Place the edge with the join down on a baking tray lined with baking paper. Alternatively you can fry them in a fry pan OR cook in a sandwich press. Once golden, serve and enjoy!
