Budget Notes
Swap roti for wraps or pita to cut costs—still delicious and easy to handle. Use canned fruit salad if mango isn’t available or in season.

Protein Changes & Vegetarian Option
Want to switch things up? Try:

  • Steak strips or prawns
  • Canned jackfruit for a pulled, plant-based version
  • Tofu or halloumi for a veggie-friendly twist

What Are Hawker Rolls?
Inspired by the bustling street food culture of Southeast Asia, hawker rolls are a handheld delight—something between a wrap and a taco, typically filled with grilled meat, crisp veg, and bold sauces. These are a Kiwi take, simplified for the home cook!

Whether you’re whipping these up on a weeknight or hosting friends for a casual meal, these BBQ Chicken Hawker Rolls are full of flavour, endlessly adaptable, and always a hit.

Ingredients

  • 650 grams chicken breast
  • 2 cloves garlic finely chopped
  • ¼ cup BBQ sauce
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp hot sauce optional
  • 2 tsp oil
  • 1 420g can of mango slices dices
  • 8 rotis

Slaw

  • ¼ cabbage sliced
  • 2 carrots grated
  • ½ cup kewpie mayo
  • 1 tsp lemon juice

Garnish

  • 1 cup coriander and mint leaves
  • 1 sliced chilli optional

Instructions

  1. So that the chicken breast cooks quickly, I place the breasts between two pieces of baking paper and bash a few times with a rolling pin to make them thinner. Place in a bowl.

  2. Take a small jug or bowl and add the garlic, BBQ sauce, honey, tomato paste, and salt and mix well. Pour the sauce over the chicken and mix to coat.

  3. In a large pan over a medium heat add 1 teaspoon of oil, once hot, add the chicken and fry on both sides until cooked through, around 8 minutes. Once cooked, slice. While the chicken is cooking, make the slaw by adding the cabbage and carrot to a bowl, add the mayo and lemon juice and mix to combine. Set aside

  4. Cook the roti in a non stick pan with a little oil on each side until cooked. To serve, start with a roti, add slaw, chicken, roti, herbs and chilli if using.

TIME SAVING NOTES

Make the sauce up to 24 hours in advance and store in the fridge.

BUDGET NOTES

Roti can easily be swapped for wraps or pitas. Frozen Roti is stoked in most Asian supermarkets and some mainstream supermarkets. You can use pita pockets or wraps if you can't find roti.

BBQ CHICKEN HAWKER ROLLS PROTEIN CHANGES

Try this dish with steak or prawns or canned jackfruit to make it vegetarian.
